About the Company
Caitlin Corbett Dance Company has been presenting work in the Boston area since 1984. Choreographer Caitlin Corbett continues her post-modern exploration of movement invention working with both formally trained dancers and a variety of non-dancers. Her early involvement with the leading voices of New York’s avant-garde helped shape an aesthetic that juxtaposes the sublime beauty of everyday movement with the innovation of modern dance. Her repertoire ranges from work with trained dancers: Rain (2002) a lush and rigorous octet and Three Quartets (2003), a mathematical investigation of form and pattern; to work which includes untrained performers: Joycie’s Pie (1992), in which a pedestrian chorus line of skippers provide counterpoint to the movements of the formally trained dancers; and Car Dance (1989) in which 10 cars performed to opera and a polish polka.
Caitlin Corbett received her BA from Bennington College where she studied with Martha Wittman and Judson choreographer Judith Dunn. She also holds a MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. She has danced with Johanna Boyce, Lisa Kraus, Wendy Perron and Susan Rethorst. Her work has been shown in Boston, Los Angeles, and was presented at the Kitchen and Movement Research in New York City. She has received commissions from Dance Umbrella (1994) and First Night (1996) as well as grants from the New England Foundation for the Arts (1995) and Massachusetts Cultural Council (1994). In 2001 and 2002, she was featured in two Greater Boston Arts Series documentaries produced by WGBH Boston. In 2002, 2003, and 2006 she received Creating and Presenting grants from Cambridge Arts Council. Her Company is listed on the Performing and Touring Roster of Massachusetts Cultural Council. Caitlin is currently an Associate Professor at Salem State College where she teaches dance. In 2005, Caitlin received a Carnegie Foundation Copper Scholarship to explore interdisciplinary teaching in the arts, specifically dance and poetry.
